It seems ...I have heard something about this case. It seems that it was not just a robbery, but a thrill-kill as well. Sexually attacking an 11 year old is beyond a normal robbery. But a lot of these criminals, once you are under they're control, ARE going to rape, torture and kill. Why not? Who is going to stop them?
In the US, police are in general a REACTIVE force, that is, they act only after a crime has taken place. That is their job; we don't have enough tax money to put a cop on every street. Security is YOUR problem.
Know what to do, how to protect yourself and your family. Know the laws. He said that around 3 a.m., "I remember I awoke in a daze.." If they had the home alarm on, he wouldn't have been asleep when they got to the bedroom and hit him on his head. I used to consult to a number of police departments;what ends up in the newspaper "police log" is often just the items selected by the (probably low ranked) reporter assigned to the job and what space there is in the newspaper allotted to it. I won't say he deserved it, but he did set himself and his family up for it by not taking basic precautions. With all he money he spent on his big home he apparently forgot to think about the safety of his family. He failed the basic rule of defense which is to perceive the threat early. That's what dogs are for. If he sleeps through the dogs barking, well, he should have hired guards.

As far as the cops go, they're proven worthless in this case. What pathetic pansies they have become. Someone should have kicked the door in. Even less without noise.

That is what home security is all about. Make it hard for them to surprise you in sleep. Not keep the SWAT team out ^^

First you have to get over the wall/metal fence to even enter the property. The moment you do that YOUR life as an invader is at risk because you could be easily shot.

-> If people can simply walk up to your front door, you failed here.

Once inside the property the bad guy should encounter your dogS.
Thats what dogs are for - not replacement for the kids you never had.
An alarm (motion detection) would be a second best option.
-> If you can easily climb over your fence and then simply walk to the house unchallenged - your outer defenses suck.

Now lets assume the bad guys are at your house. They shouldnt be able to enter with a screwdriver. You house should require heavy gear to break into. Barred windows, reinforced doors PLUS the discipline to keep them closed.

-> If a crowbar or a screwdriver is all you need to get into your locked house, you failed in house security.

Once the bad guys made it INSIDE your house it should take them a while and produce a fair amount of noise. Now is your time to act.
Do you have the proper gear to face 2-3 armed invaders? Do you have a vest, gunS, amno and *THE WILL TO FIGHT*?

-> If you are not sure you could face another human beeing face-to-face and still pull the trigger without thinking twice you failed in personal defense. Most people do.

However if your home is secure as described in this post 9/10 bad guys will not make it inside your house the final question would be much less of an issue.

You CAN stop beeing a sheep.Maldekhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10691520628595107662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8939666320943790100.post-21660491269745204622011-01-29T08:50:39.718-08:002011-01-29T08:50:39.718-08:00"There's no way in hell he (or any man) h..."There's no way in hell he (or any man) had a chance of fighting off the attackers or even making it to his gun stash alive."

Granted there's a point at which you just can't win (e.g., two guys awaken you with guns trained); however, what they're getting at is to make sure you're prepared so that you're less likely to reach that point. What do you think the Dr. would do differently if he had the chance to "redo" it... as a Dr. I am sure resources would be no problem; chain link fence, motion sensor lights, perimeter alarms, cameras, a dog outside and 2 dogs inside, security bar storm door, security bar windows, a weapon at the ready for all adults in the home. The article describes the man being beaten in his sleep, lapsing in-and-out of consciousness while tied up, and losing a lot of blood. It is often not until the summation that the jury gets the actual time line of the event. Up to that point they are getting bits and pieces.

This is not typical home invasion because one of the invaders was an ex-con but came from well to do background. Thus he was comfortable working in a well-to-do neighborhood. Also, you can drive the wealthy around to ATM machines (which they did) but unlike drug dealers or illegal immegrants, they usually don't have a lot of cash on them.

The houses were far enough apart that the neighbors could not see each other. I read a transcript of a very persistent home invader who tried to pull off a job in low income working class neighborhood. People were calling the cops as soon as they parked in the street. Very little property crime is reported in the "bad" neighborhoods. I attribute it to a couple of things. 1. If you steal in the bad neighborhoods the odds of being hurt or facing retaliations is high. 2. Poor people (relatively speaking) have less to steal as well. I live on the bad side of town and have never had a property crime. Then again I have high security doors, good lighting, alert nighbors and a couple of noisy dogs. Here in the U.S. many of the criminals are emboldened in that they believe the good people they prey on will hesitate before calling the police or taking offensive action.Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18176167494666126324noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8939666320943790100.post-72828471533467881162011-01-28T11:51:01.038-08:002011-01-28T11:51:01.038-08:00The best defense I've seen personally is to be...The best defense I've seen personally is to be (at least look) poor and scroungy.
