In my book, that tells me all I need to know about these people.****

Thanks. This is the "money quote" for me. I.e., I had no idea the Kirchner, Maduro et al. support the independence people, but I agree that is all I need to know. Very few in the U.S. are following this (not that people in the U.S. pay attention to much), but people I respect (e.g., Martin Armstrong) have observed that the EU will never allow this because, as the prior poster observed, this would mark the end of the EU, which I would view as a good thing.

Interesting how people on complete opposite sides of the political spectrum can agree on an issue for completely opposite reasons.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8939666320943790100.post-27905585401618142502017-10-07T15:36:33.565-07:002017-10-07T15:36:33.565-07:00Just one correction, Catalan is a different langua...Just one correction, Catalan is a different language from Spanish according to linguists. It is akin to the Languedoc languages of Southern France, Provenzal, etc. In fact, many Catalans would probably be terribly offended by your saying that it is a dialect of Spanish. However this is just a small point and I mostly concur with your political assessment.

Moreover I think the separatists are winning the international PR battle, appearing as peaceful citizens just asking for a right to express their opinion electorally. They claim a "right to decide", which is just newspeak for "right to self-determination", something only allowed by international law in case of colonial rule. Some European politicians have already warned that, should this be allowed, it would be the beginning of the end of the EU: other comparatively rich regions would follow suit in other countries using the same tactics that are being so fruitful for Catalan separatists (for example, apparently peaceful demonstrations and social resistance while dissension is mercilessly trampled internally. Some famous Catalans, like Joan Manuel Serrat and Isabel Coixet have been villified when they expressed their opposition to the acts of the Catalan Government). In a few decades we could be back in the first half of the 2Oth century, following a balcanization of Europe.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
