At that ...I've tested new Bic lighters at 20F. At that temperature not enough butane comes out to produce a flame. However, the spark from these lighters will ignite a cotton ball. Bic is the best common lighter out there. Lighters can also easy become slightly wet and fail to spark and matches can also be difficult to light, even the strike anywhere type, especially if the available strike surface is damp or inadequate in several ways, and especially with cold hands that cannot use the proper technique. Fire in cold climates is critical. The best 'sure fire' is the ferro rod, or military magnesium/ ferro rod combo, and tinder such Wet Fire, or a trioxane fuel bar. I prefer trioxane, but Wet Fire will float and still burn. Trioxane burns much better in windy conditions and can be easily broken into several chunks to be used later. Both produce a hot flame that can dry out cold and damp kindling or other tinder. I carry both. And I'll always carry a lighter to make it easy when possible. If there's room, throw in a few strike anywhere matches, a good striking surface and cotton balls smeared with Vaseline.

There are many way to skin a cat (sorry), but few ways to make sure you will always have fire in all conditions imaginable and in situations you have not imagined. aAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8939666320943790100.post-54836245429339571692011-01-24T08:14:01.890-08:002011-01-24T08:14:01.890-08:00An empty 12 gage shotgun shell and an empty 16 gag...An empty 12 gage shotgun shell and an empty 16 gage shotgun shell pushed together will also work for holding matches. I think this would work with a 12 and 20 gage shell too but you would probably have to tape it shut.SteveBnoreply@blogger.com
