Mostly because we don't have a massive real estate crisis of unaffordable housing hanging over the economy. shtf will happen eventually, just like real estate crashes. pushing the whole world into unnecessary tariffs and trade wars and reducing the economic power won't help things. I think the bigger short term problems are the continuing loss of lots of middle class jobs, and then the seemingly eventual war with china for the us. other than that, it's all good :-)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8939666320943790100.post-2384835863269826952017-05-19T00:01:36.458-07:002017-05-19T00:01:36.458-07:00I did a mapquest street by street of Buenos Aires ...I did a mapquest street by street of Buenos Aires and man the potholes weren't there but judging by the graffiti you wouldn't want to go out at night. In fact it looked like a city the size of LA or bigger and ever street that I saw, maybe 50 had gang graffiti on the block and some if it was major. Now would be a good time to get out of socal. In fact a 200k ghetto house will buy you 40 acres and a average 3/2 in much of the southeast. We farm here a lot in Alabama, the far south and northern parts of the state, namely Huntsville and Baldwin county are good for preppers as both have abundant food, low population density, many farmers, hunters, fresh water, high rainfall, and people are self sufficient.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8939666320943790100.post-28023894634573699342016-10-11T18:58:15.716-07:002016-10-11T18:58:15.716-07:00Very well written. The trick to these is they need to have the cylinders reamed (bored or polished) with a reamer and good gunsmiths will do this for you. While I agree my Stoeger Cougar is a better choice for most situations because of the nice light trigger pull on followup shots but if a round fails to fire you need both hands to cycle the action before you can continue. So for the situation you describe defending your moving vehicle from armed assault I'd take the Taurus magnum any day and it will hit exactly what you aim at easily out to 40-50 yards and if a dud round happens you just keep pulling the trigger and it moves on to the next round without fail.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8939666320943790100.post-86559458638923142682014-03-20T22:55:01.172-07:002014-03-20T22:55:01.172-07:00REGARDING POWER/ELECTRICITY: I teach a free class ...REGARDING POWER/ELECTRICITY: I teach a free class on carving wind gen blades and making power with a few car batteries, an inverter and treadmill motor etc. - basically a $100-$200 rig (get batteries) that can light a frugal home. Living on 12VDC has its advantages and getting AC is a luxury. I've lived off the grid 15 years now. Learn more at the windgenzen web site - all free classes.
I'd like to put a link there to these "lessons" - great insight - and add that while living off the grid I have found dried beans, rice and peas - once soaked overnight then drain and keep lightly moist - sprout in a few days and are very good for you and require no cooking. I live on a sailboat and have plenty of seafood around for just dropping a line. That plus a solar water maker and I don't need much power...and anyone thinking of attacking me has to swim or bring a boat and pirates know what to expect if they attack another pirate. It also gives me mobility to go anywhere in the world. So sad about Argentina - my sister did her Thesis in Buenos Aires and I'd like to visit or even live in Southern Argentina or Patagonia - but probably stay off shore - I don't care for city/urban life anywhere on earth these days.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8939666320943790100.post-21809130290487525542013-09-15T22:49:31.830-07:002013-09-15T22:49:31.830-07:00Thanks for posting this again. Thank you for sharing lessons learned. Congratulations on writing so well in a second language.

It's funny what you write about your aunt's perspective on social class: I came to understand your point of view in Colombia... "their poverty is what makes your life so easy." It was and is hard to communicate to compatriates that the price for soial injustice is insecurity and violence... Americans just don't understand it. We have big, open yards in front of our homes, while most third world nations - even European countries, like Italy and Greece - have 9 foot walls with broken glass embedded on top.

But we're getting there. Phoenix is now our kidnapping capital, impacting mostly illegal immigrants at the moment. That will change as things grow worse.

I also note with interest that back in 2001, Spain was a safe haven... my how things have changed! I wonder how many Spanish understand what you do now, and are ready?

I'm uncertain in this world where a safe haven might be. We've made our global economic systems incredibly interdependent and complex, and any system designer would point out that such systems just don't survive long.

What do you think? I discovered your post a year or...Dear Mr. Ferfal,

I discovered your post a year or two ago, and re-read today. Your comments and advice are absolutely excellent - very practical, and very REALISTIC. Thank you so much for sharing.

Many people in the U.S. (where I live) simply don't believe that things would ever get as bad in the U.S. as what happened in Argentina in 2001. But I am SURE that it could happen. In serious crisis, the society structure, safety, etc. all breaks down. Desperate people will do whatever it takes to get food. Policemen cannot be depended on to be on the streets to keep order – many will be home protecting their own families. Some may be corrupt and won’t be able to be trusted. People are at constant risk of being robbed or experiencing violence. I know all this because I experienced this myself, in a different country.

Although I am American, I lived for many years in an African country where the gov't was overthrown in a coup d'etat. Life became much harder and much more dangerous. We experienced people jumping in front of our car with a gun, and knew to just duck down and accelerate directly towards the gunman (because if we stopped we might have been killed). Brutal violence occurred. We would see dead bodies in the streets (which would have never happened before). Foreign hard currency was restricted (you weren’t allowed to take out of the country – which also meant that for many it would be difficult to even flee the country without money).

Even before the coup d’etat, children of the upper class would never be safe to go out alone – always had to have an adult with them. Homes were guarded 24/7 and surrounded by high stone walls covered with sharp broken glass.

Anyhow, I won’t take up any more time in writing – but only wanted to say that everything you shared on your website was helpful and very practical and much appreciated. Thanks VERY much!!!!
(I just bought your book and look forward to reading it, too…)

- A Ferfal FanAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8939666320943790100.post-19683849908773823512010-09-12T14:16:36.658-07:002010-09-12T14:16:36.658-07:00I started out with communications (various radios ...I started out with communications (various radios from ham shortwave to handitalkies, yes I am a ham), then medical supplies, food by the case lot, tools and more tools, generator, bulk gasoline storage, LP gas and stove, cases of toilet paper and paper towels, along with other stuff in general.

Then one day I said, I have no way to stop anyone from taking this stuff from me. I had no firearms. That has been addressed. I'm in the process of buying non-lethal means of protection i.e. pepper spray, tasers, stun guns.

If I had bought weapons first, my wife would probably had me committed. I'll definitely be buying your book. You outlined some of the less talked about but realistic situations (such as driving, basic vehicle and home security, etc.) that need to be considered. The fact that you're able to speak from experience is saddening, but also very reinforcing for the information provided. The realist mindset is worth gold.

I must admit, your firearm information seems to be a touch biased to your preferences, but there is little harm in that. What works for you may not fit everyone, and vice versa. The difference is you're speaking from experience in what actually works for you, vs. what you simply think will be the best.

Many thanks again, and the best of luck to you and your family.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14107887288953876678noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8939666320943790100.post-33734162353923900652010-06-15T21:43:25.253-07:002010-06-15T21:43:25.253-07:00excellent.. nice postexcellent.. nice posttyahttp://baak.jak-stik.ac.idnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8939666320943790100.post-42524241748499404172010-03-15T11:12:33.338-07:002010-03-15T11:12:33.338-07:00Excellent, eye-opening post.
