Sunglasses for Urban Survival
Knives/guns/flashlights but no post about eye-protection. Try using anything after you're blinded. Ferfal, you wear sunglasses. Are they shatter-proof? Do you have advice about which sunglasses or goggles to wear? and...what is best for everyday wear when the worst is not expected.A-
Hello A, as a matter of fact
yes, the sunglasses I use every day are Wiley X Revolvrs and they are safety
rated glasses, besides being cool-looking Italian design glasses.
Just a couple days ago I thought I lost them. Thankfully they had just fallen under the
car’s seat. I use them all the time and they are great. Fit well, tough as
nails, not too dark which is nice for wearing pretty much all the time (and
shooting at night if there’s some artificial light) and they provide excellent
peripheral vision which is essential so as to notice danger around you. The
Revolvrs and other Wiley X models exceed ANSI Z87.1 high velocity protection.
These aren’t just my everyday carry sunglasses, but also the ones I use at the
shooting range. As always, whenever you can use on the street what you use
during training!
I think it’s a good idea to
have sunglasses that also provide protection for as you say “when the worst is
not expected”. You just don’t know. Its not only ricochet from a projectile,
terrorist attack or industrial accident explosion, it can be just about
anything, even a car accident. Your eyes are important and having them
protected just makes sense. Even for less dramatic stuff like dust, wind, rain
and obviously, sun, its important to have a pair of good sunglasses. That’s why
rain or shine, I have them with me.
Finally, there’s the psychological
effect of seeing but not being seen. I don’t know exactly how to explain it but
it does give you an advantage during interactions when the other guy cant see
your eyes. Back in Argentina I would notice it more, given the larger amount of
people that you are likely to come across that are trying to take advantage of
you in one way or another.
I paid around 100 bucks for
my Wiley X Revolvrs a few years ago but now they seem to have gone down in price
some.
Wiley X Revolvr Sunglasses Price:$63.75
I like these ones too and
was considering buying one of them when I thought I had lost my old ones.
Wiley X Twisted Ops Sunglasses Price: $83.35

Secret Compartment in Leatherman Charge and Wave!
I just put 4 matches and 3 pins in there. I'd like to get a small 3/20"
firesteel, a bit of braided fishing line and a couple small hooks in
the saw compartment too.

Reply: Knife Offensive Use
Everyone wants to take a knife for granted - but once you are close, a
knife is a better weapon than a gun. It's a LONG video, but when you
have some time, go watch 'Surviving Edged Weapons' on YouTube. If you
want to know how 5 people, (or more)can be killed FAST by 1 guy with a
knife, this video will clear things up:

Thanks, a bit long but that's a good video on knife attacks.
It has some good interviews and images ( *graphic images warning*), but it is well worth watching. The lesson here would be, armed with a firearm or not, you underestimate a knife, any knife, at your own risk.

Knife Offensive Use
Hi Fernando, I thought you
may find this article interesting, if you
haven't already seen it.
It's a tragic situation, but does exemplify
how lethal a situation like
this can be:
Craig-
Thanks Craig, very
interesting.
A knife can be a terrible
weapon. Any knife will cut and most of them can be used as weapons if there’s
nothing else to defend yourself with, but a very sharp knife of considerable
dimensions and in the hands of someone knowledgeable can do an amount of damage
most people simply cant imagine.
There’s sharp and then there’s
hair slipping razor blade sharp. Such a blade will cut through clothing and flesh
like a hot knife through butter and when combined with knowledge of anatomy it
can quickly put any would be attacker down for good.
I suggest watching this
video I made some time ago, about what happens when people get cut.
