I used to do a lot with KMnO4 as a chemistry experimenter kid. Very good oxidizer means it not only kills germs, also can be mixed with stuff to deal with bad guys.

Google around.

I guess KMnO4 is better than nothing as a fire starter but if I had to choose, I'd just pack another cigarette lighter (maybe a turboflame). Also, KMnO4 doesn't care what it oxidizes. If you used a hand lotion recently don't handle KMnO4 any time soon! Finally, if you do insist on carrying it as a fire-starter, make sure you keep your brake-fluid, or whatever you are using with it, in an entirely separate place, like someone else's pack.

Excellent post. Potassium permanganate has been known about for a long time, but the knowledge has largely been lost. My mother says that during a cholera outbreak in Russia years ago, people who knew about and used PP to sterilize their water never got sick. I got 5 pounds for around 30 bucks on ebay. Should last a few lifetimes.
