Thanks Ferfal. Sounds like I threw out some food I didn't need to.
Is there a source for tips on how long other food will last? I know eggs can last for months (and you know right away if it's gone bad, so you're unlikely to poison yourself with it, sort of like milk). Is cheese OK if it's not moldy? What about unrefrigerated meat, both cooked and raw?
I've always erred on the side of caution. You don't have to have food poisoning too many times to be wary of leftovers. But this is a luxury that's easily afforded now. If things get bad, it might be a choice between eating something sketchy and not eating at all.
And I have an ulterior motive. I'll be hiking the Pacific Crest Trail for five months or so. I'm wondering how long I can eat "town food" that's been sitting unrefridgerated in my pack.
I gather this used to be pretty common knowledge. Now I'm looking for a web site to be my grandmother.
Thanks,
-Adam
